New Taipei City is committed to building a smart city with net zero carbon emissions. With the digital economic ecosystem as the core of its development, New Taipei City facilitates local economic activities and promotes sustainable development, which has received worldwide attention. Recently, New Taipei City received the 2023 GO SMART Award with the project " A new tool for net-zero carbon reduction - New Taipei Mobile Payment APP (NewTaiPAY)" among 43 submitted and 14 shortlisted projects in 19 countries.
The GO SMART Award Contest is organized by the Global Organization of Smart Cities, which encourages cooperation between cities and other city stakeholders to utilize smarter and more innovative methods to solve urban problems across cities and disciplines. While New Taipei City received the 2022 GO SMART Most Promising City Project Award with "New Taipei City Virtual Ward Platform" last year, it stood out again with the New Taipei mobile payment App NewTaiPAY that impressed international judges by promoting urban digitalization, sustainable development, and civic engagement.
“NewTaiPAY is an affirmation to New Taipei City in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 epidemic by promoting digital economic transformation and Fintech innovation with net zero carbon emission goals, guiding us towards sustainable development,” said New Taipei City Information Management Center. Since its first launch, NewTaiPAY has promoted cross-regional economic cooperation with local businesses to reward consumers with their favorite items through point redemption, accompanied by contactless payments, such as e-invoice carriers and online shopping platforms. In addition, NewTaiPAY can be used in four major convenience stores in Taiwan to accelerate the establishment of a low-carbon business model. Not only the net-zero carbon emission goals and policies in New Taipei City but also the active support and participation from the public in carbon reduction practices contribute to the success of NewTaiPAY.
In the future, New Taipei City expects to expand the influence of NewTaiPAY, continue the “citizen-first” concept, combine the latest technology with a human touch to promote sustainable urban development, and eventually build a cross-regional and national wide integrated digital economic ecosystem, with the hope to work together with other countries to put the United Nations 2050 Sustainable Development Goals into practice.
